Maria Callas was born Cecilia Sophia Anna Maria Kalogeropoulus in New York City to Greek immigrant parents, George and Evangelina. Her last name was shortened to Callas when Maria started primary school. Maria began classical piano lessons when she was 7 and loved singing as well. In 1937, her parents separated and she, her mother and her sister moved back to Greece. In Athens, Maria, changed her name back to Kalogeropoulos. Although she was under 16, they accepted her to study voice under Elvira de Hidalgo at the Royal Academy of Music, as she showed great promise.Maria made her professional debut at 16 years old, with the Royal Opera of Athens. In her early 20s, she took her first major role in Tosca. During World War II, Maria moved back to New York to spend time with her father and look for work. She was turned down from the Metropolitan Opera in America. After the war,Maria changed her last name back to Callas and moved to Italy. She quickly met and married rich industrialist Giovanni Meneghini. Callas's Italian opera debut took place at the Verona Arena in August 1947, in a performance of La Gioconda. Over the next few years, Maria performed in Florence and Verona to critical acclaim, under the management of her husband. Maria developed a reputation as a demanding diva as her fame progressed. In 1954, Callas made her American debut in Norma at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. The performance was a triumph. In 1956, she at last had the opportunity to sing with the Metropolitan Opera in her home city of New York. Within three years of the performance, Maria's health began to rapidly decline. She divorced in 1960.It was rumoured she was having an affair with shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis. He went on to marry Jacqueline Kennedy. In the early 1970s, Callas tried her hand at teaching as her roles grew further apart. Things started to fall apart in Maria's life so she moved to Paris, France, and became a recluse. On September 16, 1977, at the age of 55, Maria collapsed and mysteriously died suddenly in her Paris home.
